The Professionals and Allied Workers Union (PAWU) of the
National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) concluded its 1st Quadrennial
Delegates Congress at the CCB Auditorium, KNUST, Kumasi, with a resounding call
for unity and prioritization of workers' welfare.
Under the theme "Stronger Together: Empowering Workers'
Rights and Welfare, the Role of the Union," the congress brought together
delegates, traditional authorities, consultants, and dignitaries from the
Labour Ministry, Delegation from Executive Management- NHIA, and other labour
unions.
In his welcome address, the Ag. Ashanti Regional Director of
NHIA, Alhaji Muniru Muntaka Mohammed stressed the importance of PAWU in driving
staff welfare and collaboration with management for the benefit of members. The
representative of the minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment
assured of the ministry's commitment to prioritizing
workers' welfare nationwide.
PAWU National Chairman, Brother Yakubu Hamza, highlighted
the union's achievements, including seminars organised for members who are
getting closer to retirement, land acquisition for a hostel and conference
hall, women's empowerment programs, acquisition of accounting software and
securing affordable data packages for members.
Madam Angela Dedenamo Auch, Ag. Director, HR who represented
the CEO lauded PAWU's growth assuring Management's commitment in collaboratiing
with the union to resolve key outstanding issues like CA, SoS and other
concerns bordering the minds of staff.
She underscored the need to address concerns of staff
regarding promotions, career progression, access to emergency funds, and
training opportunities.
The three day conference which saw the sitting of Committees
of the union, submission of the committees' reports and the adoptation of the
reports by conference culminated in elections, with Brother Yakubu Hamza
securing a new term with 315 votes, beating Brother James Kayenwee 201 votes.
Other elected officials include Brother Elvis Anakwah-severin (1st Vice Chair,
unopposed), Sister Esenam Wordey (2nd Vice Chair), Brother William Adjei (294
votes) against brother Charles Nsobila's 223 was elected as the secretary,
Brother Albert Amponsah Akouko (Assistant Secretary, unopposed), Brother
Franklin Adjei Tannor (1st Trustee, unopposed), and Sister Patricia Nuekpe (2nd
Trustee).
The newly elected executives were sworn in by the union's
legal consultant, marking a new chapter for PAWU.
