The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Agona District
Office has successfully registered and renewed 3,745 members during the 2025
Akwanbo Festival in Agona Duakwa, Agona East District.
The week-long exercise, held from September 22 to 28, 2025,
formed part of the Scheme’s innovative “Festival Intrusion” initiative to bring
NHIS services closer to communities. It was also in line with the “5Kind4More”
campaign launched by Mr. Kojo Koi Thompson, Acting Central Regional Director,
to boost membership and expand access to healthcare.
Throughout the festival, the Agona District Office operated
two registration centres, where residents enrolled as new members, renewed
their NHIS cards, and linked them to their Ghana Cards. The NHIS team also
educated the public on benefit package, recent inclusions, and showcased
digital renewal options via the 929# shortcode and the MyNHIA App.
Membership
handbooks were distributed to improve awareness of members’ rights and
responsibilities.
The Chief of Agona Duakwa, who renewed his membership and
that of his family during the exercise, praised the initiative as a step
towards ensuring his people enjoy affordable and quality healthcare. “I needed
the NHIS card very badly for healthcare, but also to do a number of personal
transactions I could not complete without it,” he said.
As part of the engagement, Mr. Kojo Thompson made a donation
to the Akwanbo Planning Committee, reinforcing NHIS’s respect for culture and
tradition. He was joined by Mr. John Nzema-Mensah, Senior Monitoring and
Evaluation Officer, and Mr. Josiah Doam Kittoe, Agona District Manager, in
supporting the outreach.
The successful turnout demonstrated the NHIS Agona District
Office’s commitment to boosting membership and advancing healthcare access in
line with Ghana’s target of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.
