As part of this year’s Homowo Festival celebrations, the
National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) launched a free mass registration
exercise across the Greater Accra Region. The initiative followed a request
from the Ga Mantse and received the full backing of the Chief Executive, Dr.
Victor Asare Bampoe.
In Madina, the District Office kicked off the exercise in
the Madina West Electoral Area from August 18 to 22, 2025. Over the week, the
team visited three major mosques -Tijaniya Mosque, Washington Mosque, and
Dagadu Mosque working closely with local Imams and community leaders to
register and renew memberships for residents.
Assemblyman Hon. Ibrahim Razak
Sessie also joined forces with the team, helping mobilise people and ensuring
smooth participation.
The campaign then moved to the Ayi Mensah/Kweiman Electoral
Area on September 8 and 9, with strong support from the Kweiman Mantse, Nii
Amartey Kwei III, and Assemblyman Hon. Peter Geh.
From September 10, activities
extended to the Madina Main Lorry Station, where traders, passengers, and
community members turned out in large numbers to renew their health insurance.
Thanks to extensive sensitisation led by District Manager
Mr. Hubert Addo King Ampratwum and the PR team headed by Ms. Dorothy Martinson,
turnout was impressive.
In just a few weeks, more than 3,000 people registered,
reflecting both strong community interest and the NHIA’s commitment to
Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
The initiative was warmly welcomed, with many residents
expressing gratitude for the opportunity to register for free. For the NHIA, it
was not just about numbers, but about bringing health insurance closer to the
people during one of Ghana’s most celebrated festivals.
