The Nzema East District Office of the National Health
Insurance Authority (NHIA) joined hands with the Axim Traditional Council to
mark this year’s Kundum Festival at Axim.
The collaboration was part of the
NHIA’s Cultural Festival Outreach initiative under the Membership and Regional
Operations Directorate, which is designed to bring NHIS services closer to the
people during festive occasions.
The Kundum Festival, celebrated by the Ahanta and Nzema
people, is an age-old tradition to thank the gods and ancestors for a good
harvest.
This year’s celebration was held under the theme “Creating Partnership
for Sustainable Development and Jobs.”
As part of activities for the festival, the NHIA worked with
the Kundum Planning Committee and The Haven Place Foundation (HPF) to organise
NHIS registration and health screening for community members.
The three-day
exercise, which ran from 10th to 12th September 2025, did not only provide new
memberships and renewals but also gave the public education on the NHIS
benefits package, the Auto Reminder and Renewal system, the MyNHIS App, and the
*929# short code. Members were also reminded of their rights and responsibilities
under the Scheme.
Acting Western Regional Director of NHIA, Mr. Joseph
Meneabeh Akpoh, led a regional team to supervise the exercise. He noted that
the outreach was an important step in improving enrolment and renewals while
also engaging the public on key NHIS policies. He assured community members of
the Authority’s commitment to ending illegal charges and working to ensure
better services at health facilities.

Atribukusu III; the Member of Parliament for Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, Hon. Kofi
Arko Nokoe; and Chairperson of the Kundum Planning Committee and founder of
HPF, Ms. Eva Esselba Mends, all expressed their gratitude to NHIA for its
involvement in the festival.
The partnership ended on a high note, with over 2,000 people
registering for the Scheme. Beyond the colourful celebrations, this year’s
Kundum Festival marked another step toward improving healthcare access and
moving closer to Universal Health Coverage.
